KOTA KINABALU, April 11, 2026 – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security YB Datuk Chan Foong Hin today led a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) on a courtesy visit to Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry (MAFFI) Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
The two-hour meeting, held in a positive and constructive atmosphere, focused on strengthening cooperation between the Federal and State Governments to advance the agriculture sector and the national food security agenda in Sabah.
A key outcome of the discussions was KPKM’s agreement for MAFFI to act as the coordinating unit for the federally-funded National Agriculture and Food Empowerment Programme (PPAN) for all agriculture-related projects in Sabah. The arrangement is designed to ensure smoother project implementation, avoid duplication of efforts, and speed up the delivery of benefits to farmers, breeders, and fishing communities.
Among the major proposals discussed and mutually agreed upon were:
- Construction of a fisheries jetty in Sepanggar
- Large-scale grain corn cultivation for livestock feed in Trusan Sapi
- Construction of a rice mill in Kota Belud
- Development of pig farming in Tongod
- Upgrading of agricultural roads
- Strengthening of biosecurity controls and soil profiling
Datuk Chan Foong Hin expressed appreciation for the strong commitment and close cooperation shown by Datuk Jamawi Jaafar and the MAFFI team.
“Such close federal-state collaboration is crucial to ensure the national food security agenda is effectively implemented at the state level, taking into account local needs and Sabah’s vast potential in the agriculture and agromakanan sectors,” he said.
He also welcomed all proposals tabled during the session and pledged to further intensify efforts to develop the agriculture sector for the benefit of Sabah’s farmers, breeders, fishermen, and the rakyat.
The meeting underscores the importance of strategic partnership between the Federal Government and Sabah in driving sustainable agricultural growth and ensuring long-term food security.
