SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA March 2, 2026 — California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Monday, accusing him of prioritizing talk about White House renovations over the “tragic loss of American lives” amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict that has claimed the lives of four American soldiers.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Newsom wrote: “Donald Trump would rather talk about his ballroom curtains than the tragic loss of American lives.” The tweet included a video clip from a Medal of Honor ceremony where Trump appeared to divert from honoring service members and instead spoke at length about gold drapes and a major new ballroom construction project in the White House’s East Wing.
According to the clip, Trump described personally selecting “the nicest drape” curtains and boasted that the renovated ballroom would be “the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world.” He also suggested the project could save money on doors and other features.
The remarks came during an event intended to recognize military heroes at a time when U.S. forces are engaged in heightened tensions with Iran, resulting in recent American casualties. Newsom’s post highlights growing Democratic criticism of the president’s focus and tone during a period of national mourning and international crisis.
The White House has not issued an immediate response to Newsom’s statement.
This latest exchange underscores the deepening partisan divide in Washington as the administration navigates both domestic renovation projects and foreign military engagements. Newsom, a frequent Trump critic and potential 2028 presidential contender, has used the platform to draw attention to what he sees as misplaced priorities.
