ETHIOPIA, November 19. 2025 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim had the opportunity to hold a brief yet meaningful meeting with President Taye Atske Selassie Amde of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, in conjunction with commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, both leaders agreed that Malaysia-Ethiopia relations should be driven in a new direction by expanding cooperation from traditional sectors to high-value areas such as the semiconductor industry, the halal economy, cybersecurity, and various other strategic sectors with the potential to create shared growth opportunities.
Anwar Ibrahim also expressed the Malaysian government’s commitment through the reopening of the Malaysian Embassy in Addis Ababa last September. This move reflects Malaysia’s recognition of Ethiopia’s position as an important diplomatic hub on the African continent.
Malaysia warmly welcomes the establishment of the Ethiopian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, viewing it as another significant step to strengthen the bridge of friendship, trust, and bilateral cooperation.
“May the relationship between Malaysia and Ethiopia continue to be strengthened in the spirit of genuine friendship, mutual confidence, and benefits that can be felt by the people of both nations,” said Anwar Ibrahim in a statement posted on his social media platforms.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Ethiopia officially began in 1965, marking 60 years this year. This latest meeting is expected to serve as a turning point for closer and mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.
