CYBERJAYA, Malqysia, August 13, 2025 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from two individuals as part of an investigation into a social media video accused of mocking and disrespecting the national anthem, “Negaraku.”

The questioning took place at MCMC’s headquarters in Cyberjaya on August 12, 2025. Authorities seized one mobile phone and one SIM card to aid the probe.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years in prison, or both upon conviction.
In a statement released today, MCMC emphasized its zero-tolerance stance toward any actions that ridicule or belittle the national anthem. This aligns with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which mandates that all citizens respect the anthem.
“MCMC will not compromise with any party that mocks or ridicules the national anthem,” the commission stated, urging the public to always honor “Negaraku” as a symbol of loyalty and love for the homeland. It advised against engaging in or sharing content that could be seen as disrespectful.
The video in question reportedly features a rendition of the anthem in a satirical or derisive manner, sparking online backlash. Details on the identities of the individuals or the exact content of the video were not disclosed.
A photo accompanying the statement showed the statement-recording session at MCMC’s offices.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to regulate online content that may offend national symbols, amid growing scrutiny of social media platforms in Malaysia.
