PUTRAJAYA July 21, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday chaired the first meeting of the Majlis Ekonomi Jingga (MEJ), or Orange Economy Council, for 2026.
In a post on X, Anwar announced that the council has been established as the highest national body tasked with driving Malaysia’s creative ecosystem through strategic and collaborative governance.
“MEJ also acts as an advisory body on the orange economy to the Government and leads in the planning, implementation and monitoring of the national orange economy comprehensively,” he stated.
The council’s main role is to formulate national policies and strategies related to the orange economy by identifying issues and opportunities in the sector. The “orange economy” refers to creative and cultural industries, including film, music, animation, design, and digital content.
Anwar expressed hope that the council will drive an inclusive transformation aligned with the Malaysia MADANI vision, which prioritises human values, creativity, and sustainable economic growth.
“It is my aspiration that this highest body is able to drive an inclusive shift, in line with the Malaysia MADANI concept which prioritises human values, creativity, as well as economic sustainability,” he wrote.
The announcement was accompanied by photographs from the meeting, showing Anwar with council members and officials in a formal conference setting.
The MEJ was first announced in early April 2026 by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil as a key initiative to boost the creative sector, which contributed 6.8% to Malaysia’s GDP in 2024. The council is intended to support economic growth amid global challenges.
Anwar’s post carried the hashtags #MalaysiaMADANI, #MADANIbekerja, and #YakinMADANI.
The development marks the operational start of the council under the Madani government’s broader push to strengthen high-value, innovation-driven sectors.
