KUALA LUMPUR June 4, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the opening of the Energy Transition Conference 2026 (ETCon 2026), calling for bold action to shift from fossil fuel dependence amid global uncertainties and surging energy demands from digital technologies.
In his speech at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Anwar stressed that ongoing crises in the Middle East underscore the risks of over-reliance on fossil fuels. He urged faster adoption of renewable energy sources that are cleaner, more sustainable, and resilient.
“The future of the global energy sector demands a shift in mindset and courage to explore new solutions,” Anwar said. He pointed to the rapid growth of data centres powering artificial intelligence (AI), the digital economy, and semiconductor industries as key drivers making energy transition more urgent.
The conference, themed “Energy & AI: The Synergy for Energy Transition”, runs from June 3–5 and is spearheaded by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). It brings together industry players, policymakers, and experts from Malaysia and abroad to discuss strategic approaches for sustainable energy development.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid, an initiative aimed at strengthening regional cooperation for integrated, efficient, and secure energy sharing across Southeast Asia. This will support sustainable development and enhance energy resilience for ASEAN nations.
The event features high-level discussions on policy, innovation, sustainability, and digital infrastructure, building on the inaugural 2023 conference that launched Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap.
Anwar’s presence at ETCon 2026 underscores the government’s push toward net-zero emissions by 2050 while positioning Malaysia as a regional leader in clean energy and AI-enabled solutions.
Photos from the event show the Prime Minister addressing delegates, engaging with industry leaders at exhibition booths showcasing energy ecosystems, and highlighting collaborative efforts for a greener future.
This platform is expected to facilitate landmark agreements and partnerships to drive Malaysia’s energy agenda forward.
