WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 23, 2026 — U.S. Secret Service agents quickly neutralized an armed suspect who fired multiple shots toward the White House perimeter this evening, officials confirmed. President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, remained safe and unharmed.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the west side of the White House complex, close to 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The suspect approached a gate, brandished a firearm, and fired approximately three shots toward the grounds before agents returned fire.
The gunman was unable to breach the White House perimeter and was taken down by Secret Service personnel. A bystander was reportedly struck during the exchange of gunfire and sustained injuries, though details on the extent of those injuries remain limited as of late Saturday evening.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, with countersnipers visible on rooftops and staff directed indoors. The North Lawn was cleared as a precaution. The immediate threat was resolved within minutes, and the lockdown was lifted shortly afterward. The FBI has joined the investigation.
Fox News and other outlets broadcast live footage from the scene showing emergency vehicles, police, and National Guard personnel responding to the area. No injuries to Secret Service agents or White House staff have been reported.
This marks another security incident involving the Trump administration amid heightened concerns over threats to the president. Details about the suspect’s identity, motive, and background have not yet been released by authorities.
President Trump has faced multiple security challenges during his time in office, with officials repeatedly praising the Secret Service for its rapid response in protecting protectees.
The investigation remains ongoing. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from law enforcement.
