PUTRAJAYA. MALAYSIA March 26, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has engaged Afghanistan’s Acting Prime Minister, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, in a telephone conversation focused on current developments in South Asia, particularly the ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan and the recent ceasefire between the two countries.
In a detailed statement posted on his official X account late yesterday, PM Anwar expressed hope that the discussions would pave the way for sustainable stability rooted in the Islamic principles of ihsan (compassion) and ukhuwah (brotherhood).
“I have spoken with the Acting Prime Minister of Afghanistan, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, regarding the latest developments in the South Asian region and its surroundings, especially concerning the Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions and the ceasefire involving both countries, hoping that it can be translated and developed towards sustainable stability based on the values of ihsan and ukhuwah,” Anwar wrote.
The Prime Minister also extended warm Eid Mubarak greetings on the occasion of Aidilfitri to Mullah Akhund and the people of Afghanistan.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s consistent support for diplomatic efforts in the region, including initiatives driven by friendly nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye. He highlighted Malaysia’s ongoing humanitarian assistance, delivered through strategic partnerships with Global Peace Mission and MERCY Malaysia. These efforts include repairing educational infrastructure, medical expertise training, and enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
On the multilateral front, Malaysia will continue playing an active role within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in evaluating the recognition of Afghanistan’s current de facto authorities. This engagement is guided by core principles of justice, inclusivity, the protection of women’s rights and minority groups, as well as ensuring access to education.
“Malaysia’s approach remains anchored in a balance between principles and pragmatism — igniting hope, building confidence, and demonstrating leadership as a vehicle for peace in an increasingly turbulent world,” the statement concluded.
The conversation comes as cross-border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which escalated in late February 2026, saw a temporary Eid al-Fitr pause earlier this month that has since ended, prompting renewed calls for de-escalation from regional and international actors.
Malaysia’s proactive diplomacy underscores its commitment to fostering solidarity within the ummah and advancing peace-building initiatives under the MADANI framework.
