In his speech, Anwar emphasized that parliaments serve as the highest platform for representing citizens and safeguarding democratic principles. “This institution must be defended and strengthened, whether in Malaysia, Timor-Leste, or any nation that upholds democracy,” he declared, highlighting that public trust in democratic systems fosters national stability and strengthens regional unity within ASEAN.

Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s unwavering support for Timor-Leste’s aspiration to become a full ASEAN member, noting that such membership would not only bolster regional cohesion but also unlock broader opportunities for collaboration in trade, education, and technology. “Malaysia is committed to standing with Timor-Leste as it pursues its rightful place in the ASEAN family,” he said.

Addressing contemporary geopolitical challenges, the Prime Minister called for deeper ASEAN interconnectivity and the adoption of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and green energy, to drive an inclusive and sustainable future for the region.

The address, warmly received by Timor-Leste’s parliamentary leaders, underscored the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and Malaysia’s dedication to fostering a united, forward-looking ASEAN.
