TANJONG MALIM, 12 March 2026— Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is representing Malaysia and the ASEAN region in an international education initiative aimed at promoting sustainable development through community-based values inspired by the local “Kampung Spirit”.
The programme, known as the Global Teachers for a Sustainable Future (GTSF) initiative, brings together 11 universities and educational associations from 10 countries, namely Spain, Germany, Austria, Türkiye, Ukraine, Colombia, Romania, Mexico and Sweden, in a collaborative effort to strengthen the role of education in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The initiative has involved more than 400 students from participating countries, focusing on how future educators can contribute to building a more sustainable, inclusive and connected global society through practical learning beyond the classroom.
UPSI representatives said the programme reflects Malaysian communal values such as mutual cooperation, shared responsibility and respect for diversity, which are embedded in the concept of the “Kampung Spirit”.
“The initiative demonstrates that local wisdom and community-based practices can play a significant role in addressing global challenges, particularly in the field of education for sustainable development,” the university said in a statement.
Through the pilot programme, the concept of “Internationalisation at Home” is implemented via hands-on activities designed to strengthen intercultural understanding and collaboration among students from different countries.

Participants begin with activities that focus on building trust and community identity before moving into academic discussions related to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which emphasises inclusive and equitable education for all.
The programme adopts a three-stage learning process involving group discussions, personal reflection and collaborative planning, allowing students to analyse global education issues while identifying local challenges related to equity, inclusion and access to quality learning.
According to the organisers, these activities reflect the five key pillars of sustainable development People, Prosperity, Peace, Planet and Partnerships while preparing future teachers to become agents of change in their respective communities.
The university said the GTSF initiative also aligns with Malaysia’s higher education development plans and supports national efforts to strengthen global collaboration in teacher education.
“With the integration of local values and global perspectives, this initiative shows how Malaysian institutions can serve as knowledge brokers, connecting community-based experiences with international sustainability goals,” the statement said.
The programme is expected to continue expanding with greater participation from international partners, reinforcing the role of education in shaping a sustainable future.
